How Our Dog Food Calculator Works
Our dog food calculator uses veterinary-approved formulas to help you determine the right amount of food for your furry friend.
The Science Behind the Calculations
1. Resting Energy Requirement (RER)
We start with the veterinary standard RER formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75
This formula, recommended by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and veterinary nutritionists worldwide, calculates the basic energy needed for essential bodily functions.
2. Daily Energy Requirement (DER) Multipliers
We multiply RER by life stage and activity factors based on veterinary research:
- Low Activity (Senior/Indoor/Spayed-Neutered): RER × 1.2
- Normal Activity (Typical Adult): RER × 1.6
- High Activity (Working/Very Active): RER × 2.0-2.5
3. Food Type Caloric Densities
We use industry-standard caloric densities for different food types:
- Dry Food/Kibble: ~3,750 kcal/kg (375 kcal per cup)
- Wet/Canned Food: ~1,000 kcal/kg (225 kcal per cup)
- Raw Food: ~1,750 kcal/kg (450 kcal per cup)
Note: These are average values. Actual caloric density varies by brand and formula. Always check your specific food's feeding guidelines and caloric content.
